It was through reading A.L. Haight's "Banned Books" that she learned about Pope Joan, who succeeded Leo IV as "John VIII," as mentioned in Hartmann Schedel's "Nuremberg Chronicle" (1493). This book wasn't officially banned, but references to the female pope were often censored or removed. To this day, there remains argument about whether she ever existed or not!

Reading banned, challenged, and frequently-censored books opens us up to all kinds of possibilities!
